God of War 3 Review!

God of War 3! The trilogy in this epic series continues, God of War 3 picks up straight from where God of War 2 finished off. At the end of God of War 2, our anti-hero Kratos was charging up mount Olympus on the back of a Titan, with an army of Titans behind him. And this is where God of War 3 starts off...

Kratos...face-to-face with Hades (The best Boss in the game)

Gameplay: The gameplay is similar to the other games in the series, in that Kratos has blades attatched to his arms that he swings around. But this time, all of his sub weapons are more-or-less in the same vein...weapons on "chains" that he swings around. I found this less than creative, since his main weapon is the same. In this game, Kratos rips the head off the God "Helios", which he then uses as a weapon & it also reveals secrets. In my opinion this was another missed oportunity to give Kratos a weapon that is fun to use, since all the head really does is act as a torch...it just temporarily blinds enemies. He might as well have been given a head of lettuce to use to defeat enemies.

Kratos with his Gauntlets (They actually detatch from his hands, & swing around on chains).

Graphics: The graphics are amazing, as you'd expect. Kratos has never looked better, the overall attention to detail is all there. The enemies have all been creatively designed, and in general the artwork & creativity in the level designs is brilliant.
Story: Unfortunately the story falls flat on its face, it is full of plot holes & insults your intelligence at every turn. Some of the script sounds like it was written by the writers of Scooby Doo, at the end I was half expecting to hear Zeus say "And I would've got away with it...if it wasn't for those damn kids". The story takes itself waaaaaaay too seriously, which would be fine if it was of any substance, but the story is empty if you barely scratch the surface. Kratos does & says some pretty stupid things that makes him come off as totally brainless, and Athena comes off a real bitch in it...a big contrast from the deep character that the first 2 games took time to build her up as.

Kratos at the Doors to Olympus, about to fight an army with golden armour.

In summary, God of War 3 is worth a buy. Just be prepared to "suspend your intelligence" as the story unfolds. I recommend playing it on the harder settings to get the most out of it.

Some statistics: "Gamerankings" gave this game a score of 92.63% and "Metacritic" gave it 92/100.

I give God of War 3, 3 out of 5 stars.

Uncharted 3 Review!

Right! Uncharted 3! Where to begin!?...Ok then: The previous 2 Uncharted games were well made, entertaining, had beautiful landscapes, great gameplay, characters & story. This entry is no different, once again you take on the role as the "Nathan Drake", the laid-back treasure hunter that does it mainly for the sake of the adventure, with his old buddy "Sully". You move along from one extremely breathtaking situation to the next, as well as amazing locations. The characters are really solid, and has a good story. The gameplay is as you would expect, action-filled, fun etc. This is polished from start to finish.
However, in a way the developer's attempts to make the game so polished can detract from it a little at times. Some of the sequences (as breath-taking as they are), can feel a bit too automatic - as in - you basically follow a very strict, pre-determined path. This is fine on 1st playthrough (novelty value), but on a second playthrough it loses that element of surprise & those sections become bascially auto-scrollers. But this is only a very minor nit-pick, to what is - otherwise - a truly amazing experience.
In summary, even tho my favourite entry in the Uncharted series is the 1st one. This is well worth a purchase, had some of the auto-scolling sections been a bit more flexible, this game would have topped the 1st one. This is a highly polished entry, you'll sometimes just stop to explore the amazing details of the locations. Just to admire the artistry & creativity of the people that created this world.
How many stars do I give Uncarted 3? I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars!

DmC: Devil May Cry Review!

________________________________________________________________________________
There has been a lot of hate for this game by older fans of the series, intitially the complaints were that the main character has had an extreme make-over (hair colour change f.e). Then complaints about the demo, that the gameplay did not compare with the previous 4 games etc. Since I have no knowledge of the previous history of this game, I can only approach it with fresh eyes. And as such, I will review it only on its own merits. Let's start:

1. Gameplay: Dante's attacking moves are all quite interesting & fun to use, you can flow from one movement into the next flawlessly. And it has so much variety that there is a lot of room for personal creativity with regards to what combo you will demolish an enemy with.

A bad aspect of the gameplay is that the majority of the enemies are vulnerable to many exploits. You can find combos that basically keep an enemy completely immobilised, which takes away from the challenge. You can walk away without any sense of real gaming accomplishment. I will make note that I have not completed the game at its highest difficulties, so things may be different with regards to these issues on those higher settings.

2. Graphics & level design etc:
The level design is great. Easy to navigate, extremely interesting & creative choices make exploring this world quite fun. It has been designed to make you feel like you are inside some surreal dream, one entire level is completely upsidedown!

However, most of the enemies look extremely similar. So it can feel that you are endlessly battling the same guys over & over again, which can get boring.

3. Glitches! It has heaps of glitches! Most people don't like this aspect, but I love glitches in games (as long as they are good ones). You can do certain combos that enable you to get out-of-bounds of the actual game, there is even a flying glitch! Yes you can make Dante fly around like superman, these glitches let you skip entire levels by going to the end of the level by means unintended by the developers.

Overall, despite its flaws this is a game worth getting if you've never played any of the previous DMC games. If you have, rent it before deciding.

So, how many stars do I give DmC: Devil May Cry? 3.5 stars out of 5

I leave you with a video of the flying glitch I mentioned:
